Methodology
How we collect, process, and present campaign finance data
Data Sources
MyRep.vote aggregates campaign finance data from multiple authoritative sources to provide comprehensive coverage of political money flows in the United States.
- Federal Election Commission (FEC) - Primary source for federal campaign finance filings, including PAC reports (Form 3X), independent expenditures (Form 24), and candidate committee reports.
- Senate Office of Public Records - Lobbying disclosure reports and foreign agent registrations.
- State Election Boards - State-level campaign finance data where available through official APIs.
Data Processing
Raw filing data undergoes several processing steps to ensure accuracy and usability:
- Entity Resolution - We match PACs, candidates, and organizations across filings using fuzzy matching and manual verification to create unified profiles.
- Industry Classification - PACs are categorized by industry using a combination of FEC codes and our proprietary classification system.
- Real-time Updates - We sync with FEC databases every 15 minutes during business hours to capture new filings as they become available.
- Amendment Handling - When amended filings are submitted, we update our records to reflect the most current information while maintaining historical records.
Calculations & Metrics
Key metrics displayed on MyRep.vote are calculated as follows:
- Total Raised - Sum of all itemized and unitemized contributions reported to the FEC for the current election cycle.
- PAC Funding Percentage - Contributions from registered PACs divided by total contributions, expressed as a percentage.
- Independent Expenditures - Money spent by PACs and other organizations to support or oppose candidates without coordinating with campaigns.
Limitations
While we strive for accuracy and completeness, users should be aware of certain limitations:
- FEC data may be delayed by up to 48 hours from when filings are submitted.
- Some contributions below reporting thresholds ($200 for itemized contributions) are aggregated and cannot be attributed to specific donors.
- Dark money spent through 501(c)(4) organizations is not required to be disclosed and is not included in our data.
